Summer Game Fest 2026: FFVII Revelation, RE Veronica, and the Most Stacked June in Years
Summer Game Fest 2026: FFVII Revelation, RE Veronica, and the Most Stacked June in Years
Two hours. One stage. A whole lot of "wait, they actually showed THAT?"
Summer Game Fest 2026 went down on June 5 at the Dolby Theatre in LA, and honestly? It slapped. Geoff Keighley and Lucy James hosted what a lot of outlets β and a solid chunk of the community β are already calling the best SGF yet. Was it perfect? No. Did it have some live-service filler that made you reach for your phone? Yes. But when it hit, it hit. Here's everything worth knowing.
The Big One: Final Fantasy VII Revelation is Real
Let's not bury the lede. Square Enix closed the show with the official reveal of Final Fantasy VII Revelation β the title for Part 3 of the FFVII Remake trilogy β and it was the right call.
Geoff had actually telegraphed this one a bit: he publicly promised beforehand that the final reveal would be a single-player narrative game and "not an online live-service shooter." After The Game Awards 2025's Highguard controversy, that was him reading the room. Delivering Revelation as the closer felt like a genuine flex.
Here's what we know: Revelation promises a larger, more open world built around the Highwind, with aerial exploration, parachuting, and chocobos all tied together into what sounds like the most systemically ambitious entry in the trilogy. Full Weapons boss fights are confirmed, and Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are both confirmed playable β which alone is going to send FFVII lifers into orbit.
The new FIT gear system lets characters swap outfits that actually change their movesets, which is giving dressphere/job-system vibes and has people speculating about real build variety in the endgame.
Biggest industry story here? Simultaneous multi-platform launch in spring 2027. No timed PlayStation exclusivity. That's a clean break from how both Remake and Rebirth were handled, and it signals a shift in how Square Enix β and maybe prestige JRPGs more broadly β are going to market going forward.
Reception is positive but not unanimous: most outlets are framing it as a satisfying thematic capstone, while some fans have concerns about how far the story has diverged from the original and whether the final act can stick the landing. Fair anxieties. We'll see.
The "Finally" Moment: Resident Evil: Veronica
Right behind Revelation on the hype chart? Resident Evil: Veronica β Capcom's long-awaited remake of Code Veronica, confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC, due in 2027.
Fans have been asking for this since the RE2 and RE4 remakes proved the formula works. Code Veronica is one of the most fondly remembered β and longest-neglected β entries in the series, so this reveal hit different for a lot of people. Note that Capcom has dropped "Code" from the title entirely, which has sparked some interesting speculation about whether this is a straight remake or a broader reinterpretation aimed at newer audiences.
First-person elements are in. 2027 window is confirmed. That's all we've got for now, but it's plenty.
Horror Is Back on the Menu
SGF 2026 went heavy on horror across multiple angles, and it worked.
Alien: Isolation 2
The cult-classic survival horror sequel is real. Alien: Isolation 2 from Creative Assembly moves the action off the Nostromo-era space station and onto a storm-wracked colony world β expanded environments, weather-driven tension, same stealth horror DNA. PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC are all confirmed. No hard date yet, but this existing at all is news enough.
Saw: Genesis
Bloober Team β the studio behind The Medium and Layers of Fear β is making a 3v1 asymmetric multiplayer horror game in the Saw universe. Elaborate trap arenas, one player as the killer, three trying to survive. A closed alpha sign-up went live during the show. Whether you're skeptical of the Saw IP or not, asymmetric horror has legs (see: Dead by Daylight), and Bloober's atmospheric chops are a good fit here.
Lords of the Fallen 2
The follow-up to Hexworks' Soulslike dropped a gory NSFW trailer and confirmed a fall 2026 launch. If you vibed with the first one's dual-world traversal mechanic, this is on your radar already.
Anime, JRPGs, and Character Action Overload
SGF 2026 had a strong lean into anime IP and anime-styled action, which felt very intentional.
Attack on Titan 3
Koei Tecmo and Omega Force are back. Attack on Titan 3 promises to cover the entire story of the manga and anime, with upgraded omni-directional mobility combat across PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series, and PC. Mid-2026 (exact date unconfirmed). If you played the first two games, you know what this is β and if you've finished the manga, you already know you need it.
Stellar Blade: Blood Rain
Shift Up revealed Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, a follow-up to their acclaimed 2024 character action game. New protagonist Evie, a dense metropolis setting, and grotesque enemy designs. One of the most talked-about trailers of the night. This is clearly being positioned as a high-production anime-styled character action title, and the vibes are strong.
Street Fighter 6 x Final Fantasy VII β Tifa Is In
Year 4 DLC for Street Fighter 6 is bringing Tifa Lockhart from FFVII as a playable guest character. Materia-inspired moveset. New fighters Yasmine, Arjun, and Bosch also confirmed. Peak crossover energy β the crowd loved it.
Wuthering Waves x Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
If you play Wuthering Waves, a collab with Edgerunners kicks off June 8. The gacha-meets-prestige-anime crossover machine keeps turning.
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds
Year-two content for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds includes Godzilla and Evangelion collabs. Because why not.
Sequels and Surprises Worth Tracking
Virtua Fighter: Crossroads
Sega and RGG Studio (Yakuza/Like a Dragon devs) are making the first mainline Virtua Fighter since 5, and it's apparently story-heavy with Shenmue-adjacent presentation. That's a wildcard combination that could either be brilliant or bizarre. 2027 window. Definitely keep an eye on this one.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
PlatinumGames is adapting the darker Last Ronin comic storyline into an action game. TMNT in the hands of the studio behind Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising, taking on a mature, post-apocalyptic storyline β this is easily one of the more intriguing "wait, what?" announcements of the show.
Guild Wars 3
ArenaNet announced Guild Wars 3 with expanded movement systems and revamped combat. Beta is targeting 2027, with releases on PC and PS5. MMO fans have been waiting for this for a long time β we'll see if the beta shows something truly different.
1666: Amsterdam
Patrice DΓ©silets (of Assassin's Creed origins fame) showed 1666: Amsterdam, a witchy historical game set in 17th-century Amsterdam. There's a free 30-minute prologue on Steam right now, with broader Early Access later this year. That's a genuinely interesting move β go play the prologue and make up your own mind.
Single-Player Titles on the Near Horizon
Beyond the 2027 stuff, SGF 2026 confirmed some solid near-term drops for single-player fans:
- Control: Resonant β Remedy's sequel shifts focus to Dylan Faden, with melee-heavy combat and a supernatural Manhattan. Out September 24, 2026.
- The Blood of Dawnwalker β From former Witcher devs at Rebel Wolves. Dark fantasy RPG with a structure that ties a historical storyline to a present-day narrative. Launching September 3, 2026.
- Star Wars: Zero Company β Tactical RPG in the Clone Wars era from Bit Reactor and Respawn. XCOM-style squad combat, confirmed Anakin Skywalker appearance. Out August 27, 2026.
- Star Wars: Galactic Racer β High-speed pod-racing game with a campaign and Sebulba front and center. Pure nostalgia fuel for Episode I fans. Out October 6, 2026.
- Palworld 1.0 β July 10. The monster-catching survival game's wild early-access run officially transitions to a full release.
Live-Service Maintenance: The Necessary Evil
A sizeable chunk of the show was live-service updates, which is just the reality of modern showcases. Whether you love it or find it padding is up to you.
- Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance β A massive expansion with aerial exploration and floating ruins. Due 2027.
- Fortnite: Runners (Chapter 7, Season 3) β Went live right after the show. Ben Starr on stage. Carry on.
- Hitman: World of Assassination β Wiz Khalifa is the next Elusive Target. Sure.
The Weird Stuff (aka The Discourse Fuel)
RGG Studio's Stranger Than Heaven revealed that it features Tupac Shakur's likeness, with Snoop Dogg appearing on stage to talk about working with the estate. Immediately opened up debate about posthumous digital performances and the ethics of using deceased artists in games. That conversation is not going away.
The Attack on Titan 3 trailers listed conflicting release dates depending on where you watched, which is the kind of sloppy marketing pipeline thing that happens when shows move fast and regional localization can't keep up.
So Was It Actually Good?
Yeah, mostly. The community reaction is skewing strongly positive β "best SGF yet" is getting thrown around a lot, and it's hard to argue against it when you look at the hit-rate: FFVII Revelation, RE Veronica, Alien Isolation 2, Virtua Fighter Crossroads, TMNT: Last Ronin, Blood of Dawnwalker, Control Resonant, AoT 3, Stellar Blade Blood Rain. That's a lot of wins in two hours.
The recurring criticism β more remakes and expansions than genuine new IP β is valid. Looking at that lineup, it's almost entirely established franchises. The industry is risk-averse and that shows. But when the remakes and sequels are things like Code Veronica and Alien Isolation, it's hard to stay mad.
2027 is shaping up to be genuinely stacked: FFVII Revelation, RE Veronica, Virtua Fighter Crossroads, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Guild Wars 3, and The Wolf Among Us 2 all in the same calendar year would be a lot. We'll see what actually ships on time.
The full VOD is up on the official Summer Game Fest YouTube channel if you want to catch anything you missed. Here at Xadin Labs, we'll be covering the big ones in more depth as release dates get closer β starting with whatever drops first.
